What is core bit re-tipping?

Core bit re-tipping is a type of core bit repair that replaces the worn diamond segments while keeping the original steel barrel. When the barrel is still straight and sound, a retip can bring the bit back into service for less than the cost of a new one. Some contractors call it a core bit rebuild or core barrel repair; the aim is the same: to restore cutting performance and extend the tool’s working life.

Signs your core bit needs re-tipping

  • The segments are low, uneven or close to the barrel
  • The bit runs hotter than usual

Which core bits can be re-tipped?

We can inspect and re-tip diamond core bits from any brand, not only ForceDiam. That includes our own ranges, such as Elite, HTX, Shark, Turbo-X, Vortex and Gold Edition, as well as core bits from other manufacturers. To be suitable, the barrel should be straight, free from major cracks or deformation, and in good condition around the connection. Bent, cracked or heavily worn barrels usually need to be replaced instead.

Re-tip or replace?

Re-tipping is usually the better choice when only the diamond segments are worn and the barrel and connection are in good condition. It reduces replacement costs, keeps existing barrels in service and cuts waste. If a barrel is damaged, or repair would not be cost-effective, we will tell you and recommend a replacement from our diamond core bit range. How the ForceDiam re-tipping process works

We use laser welding to attach the new diamond segments to the barrel. Each core bit goes through the following steps:

  1. Inspection: we check the barrel for damage, wear and distortion, and confirm it is suitable for re-tipping.
  2. Segment removal: the worn segments and old attachment material are removed.
  3. Barrel preparation: the barrel is cleaned and prepared so the new segments sit correctly.
  4. Segment selection: replacement segments are chosen to suit the material and application.
  5. Laser welding: the new segments are positioned with correct spacing and alignment, then laser welded to the barrel.
  6. Final check: the finished core bit is inspected before it is returned to you.

Before sending or bringing your core bits in, you can send us a photo on WhatsApp (086 143 0333) for an initial assessment, or submit your request using the form below. You can then:

  • Drop off your core bits at our unit: Unit 5, Tolka Valley Business Park, Ballyboggan Road, Cabra West, Dublin 11, D11 FT52 (Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00)
  • Send your core bits to us by courier
  • Arrange return delivery of your core bits once the re-tipping work is complete
